The 3rd largest stakeholder in French industrial tourism, EDF has always been keen to open its hydroelectric developments to the public to introduce them to this industrial heritage.
Situated in the heart of the Limousin, where two French “départements”, Creuse and Haute-Vienne, meet, Lake Vassivière and its underground hydroelectric power plant, Mazet at Peyrat-le-Château, are a key development in the regional electricity supply and the largest tourist hub in the Limousin area.
The reservoir behind the Vassivière straight gravity dam was filled with water at the end of 1949. The power plant was commissioned in 1951 and has an installed power of 63.7 MW. Each year it produces the equivalent of the electricity consumption of a town with 40,000 inhabitants, like Brive.
