Information

The history of Toulouse and the Garonne is closely linked. It was the river which dictated the position and development of Toulouse and its economic activity until the arrival of the railway line in 1856. Just a few kilometres from its confluence with the Ariège, its bed starts to wind and its waters slow down. The right bank, which is 8 to 10 m higher than the left bank, was idea for human activity. The river could even be forded on foot or on horseback at Le Bazacle thanks to paving stones before any bridge was even built. This natural ford, built during the Roman era, allowed water mills to be built in the 12th century, the forerunners of these electricity mills, otherwise known as hydroelectric power plants. In 1889, one of these old mills was transformed into a hydroelectric power plant which is still active. Its power (3 MW) corresponds to then needs of approximately 7,000 inhabitants.

It is now an EDF visitor centre. In addition to the tour of the facilities, some very interesting temporary exhibitions can be seen, the hydraulic underground tunnels and a fish pass built to help migration. This phenomenon can be watched through a porthole in the basement looking into one of the basins in the fish pass. The pass is also used to count the fish as they journey past the dam. It is educational and it should not be forgotten that it is below the level of the Garonne.

A 400 m² platform built for bird-watching gives a fantastic view over the Garonne (don’t forget your binoculars).

The centre is a place of technical discoveries and flowing poetry which welcomes 100,000 visitors each year
