The Serre-Ponçon dam
Built in 1955, the EDF Serre-Ponçon dam and all the hydroelectric developments on the Durance and the Verdon are behind the unified management of water in the Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur region.
The EDF hydroelectric development at Serre-Ponçon, an immense reservoir containing 1.2 billion m3 of water (the equivalent of 600,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools) was designed to collect and store the water resource in order to share it out among all the needs: production of renewable energy, drinking water, agriculture, industry and also the economic life and attractiveness of the area thanks to tourist activities around the reservoirs.
A unique structure in France, it safeguards regional water management, protecting Provence against drought and regulating the terrible floods the Durance experienced in the past.
